In honor of Wisconsin Museums Week, the Cunningham museum will unveil two new displays. A replica of a Victorian wedding dress passed down by one of the founding families and a reproduction of a Civil War uniform worn by one of the six men from Pleasant Ridge who fought for the Union in the Civil War will be displayed on African-American mannequins.
The Cunningham Museum is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM and will have expanded hours during the summer when it will add Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM as well.
The Mitchell-Rountree Stone Cottage is a piece of old England and colonial Virginia located only fifteen miles from the Mississippi River. Its style of architecture is known as Virginia Tidewater. The Tidewater is the area around Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. It includes Jamestown, the earliest English settlement in the U.S. The Cottage was built in 1837 as a retirement home for Samuel Mitchell, a Revolutionary War veteran, and his wife. It was built in the Virginia Tidewater style popular in Mitchell's native Virginia. A minister, he settled in Platteville to be near his daughter, Mary Grace, who was married to John Rountree, the founder of Platteville.
The Mitchell-Rountree Stone Cottage is open from noon to 4:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day through the week-end after Labor Day.
